The Cup Design work is about conceiving a design concept for a ceramic Gelato Cup for a startup Gelato company. The theme and image of the brand will be considered as the key points and features for the design concept.

Project Aim:
Attempting to create an in-store Gelato Cup concept that can cover the pain points while also go for a design enhancement opportunity as much as possible. Meeting the aesthetics towards the theme of a brand is also a focus for this project.

Research
The main focus of the company for creating a concept cup design is a Indonesian based start-up Gelato company, Saint Tropic. The flagship product offering of this business is Gelato in which they offered many different flavours, though they have also offered other products such as churros and other savouries. Based on the name itself, the main theme and keyword adopted by the brand is mainly “Tropical“.

The main focus of creating the new concept design is the Gelato cup itself which will be purposed to be primarily served for eating in-store. The main keyword/theme of Tropical as well as the main products offered will be the considerations of the new concept design.
Ideation
With the tropical theme in mind, it is decided that the design of the cup will be based on a coconut, which is an item that highly represents the Tropical theme.
Within this stage, pain points and design opportunities is also investigated. One detected pain point is about the placing the spoon which it either had to be placed within the gelato or on the table. The design opportunity founded is the space to place other/secondary snacks or savouries as well on the same cup.
These inspirations and ideas have spawn 2 Design possibilities, both of which were sketched and rendered in order to further illustrate the idea before modelling. The 2 improved designs of the Coconut Cup will be further developed and created in a 3D 1:1 scale in the intended ceramic material.
Final Concept Design

Regarding the base, the design of the Gelato Cup is highly inspired by the form of Coconuts, that represents the tropical theme which also represents the visual personality of the brand.



As mentioned, the 1st Design Concept featured a small section where small snacks and savouries can be stored alongside the Gelato itself. The 2nd Design Concept features an external section designed to store Gelato spoons.





Further Recommendations
As the features from both design concepts have presented a significant convenience in design, it is favourable that the 2 features will be merged into one major final design of the Gelato Coconut Cup. The size of the cup itself though should be slightly smaller, balancing the standard size of a Gelato Cup and the size to accommodate other forms of snacks and savouries.
