This product design project is about improving a traveller’s experience. I followed the brief of improving a Travel Case that would benefit users towards practicality, accessibility and security of their travel essentials.

Category: Product Design. Year: 2019. Design Works Involved: Research, Sketching, Product/3D, Graphics, Branding

Project Aim:

Conceiving a smart travelling product that would maximise the usage and experience for a traveller and its belongings.

Secondary Research

The trends of travelling products were considered in order to paint a picture on the aesthetics and demanded features of the focused product.

Looking towards the findings based from news articles and trend forecasting sources such as WGSN, it is evident that functionalityaccessibility and security are 3 of the most desired features of a travel bag or case.

The analysis of existing travel cases will also determine the aesthetic choices of the design.

The ongoing conditions and cases within the travelling environment is also part of the attention, this is to find out the problem of the travelling scene which will then be an opportunity for improvements of the destined product.

The secondary research based from news articles suggested that loss and stolen items were a common case within the travelling environment.

Primary Research

The existing travel case will be carried out towards practical travelling conditions. This will illustrate the problems and opportunities for the new intended design of a travel case. From this analysis, functionality, access and secure were the factors that could be improved for a travel case.

Design Specification

The demands selected in order to find ways to improve the design of a Travel Case. Each points of the specs were in response towards the mentioned insights from Secondary and Primary research.

Ideation Stage

In response towards the design specs, multiple ideas were illustrated with numerous ideas and possibilities. These ideas were converge into one main idea which will be selected for further development for the final design.

Product Concept Testing

The “Shoulder Bag” design approach is selected for further development. The testing and development involves phases consists of features and aesthetic choices, each overcome will be the part of the final design.

The final concept design will be selected for further development towards finishing. Some parts of the final concept will be altered in order to comply with materials and the manufacturing process, the further changes will result towards the grand final design.

Final Design – M-PTC Travel Case

The M-PTC acts as a mobile pocket designed to store small travel items for a better reach and access for a traveller towards its belongings. The 2 layer design of the case improved security and spawned the liberty to have a Sliding Feature of the Interior Form which can be slide in and out of the outer shell for better access and protection for a traveller’s items.

The interior form can be easily accessed by exposing the outer form and pull out the inner form forwards. The inner storage consists of space to store travel documents, electronic gadgets, and other possible items.

4 Exterior colour options were available for this product, all based on the trends and preference of this product towards customers.
